From May 6thto May 7th, 2016, “Summit Forum on First-class University Undergraduate Education”, co-hosted by Xiamen University and China Association of Higher Education, was held in Xiamen University. Fan Yuejin, Party Secretary and President of Qingdao University, attended this meeting and delivered a speech on “Five Major Relationships to be Addressed in First-class Undergraduate Education”
According to Fan, first-class undergraduate education has two basic features. It should conform to the law of education and the law of the growth of talents, and teaching results should be recognized by the society. To achieve first-class undergraduate education, five major relationships should be handled, including the relationship between growing up and becoming useful people, the relationship between teaching and educating, the relationship between knowledge instruction and cultivation of innovative ability, the relationship between educational reform and study reform, and the relationship between design of teaching situations and evaluation of students’ study.
In addition, President Fan also introduced from five aspects the exploration and practice of Qingdao University in pursuing first-class undergraduate education, namely, creating a talent training mode of “general education + professional education + multielement” and “general education + professional education + practice”, designing and assessing teaching based on cultivatinglearners, organically unifying knowledge instruction with the cultivation of innovative ability into theteaching process, promoting the reform of thecredit system in depth so as to give students the right of choice as much as possible, and changing the method of academic evaluation and setting teaching situations scientifically.
