Professor L. A. Belfiore was selected by Central Organization Depart
ment and State Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs as one foreign expert entitled by the National Expert of Foreign One-thousand-talents Scheme.
L. a. Belfiore is a professor in Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at Colorado State University, and he is the director of Polymer Physics Centre. He studied in Stevens Institute of Technology during 1972.9-1976.6 and got the bachelor degree there. He studied in University of Wisconsin during 1978.9-1982.6 and got the doctor degree in polymer science.
He worked in American shell company empty West Research Center, Eastman Kodak laboratories, AT & T Bell Laboratories, the U. S. Department of energy solar energy research and the California Science University NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other departments during September 1976 to January 1983. He began to work in Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at Colorado State University in January 1983. Then he was promoted as associate professor in January 1989 and was promoted as professor in January 1997.
Professor Belfiore is an international expert on metal ion doped polymer. He is a pioneer and founder of the metal ion polymer materials. He introduced stability of ligand field theory into the polymer metal ion complex field. He is the first one who proposed the concept of macromolecule metal complex earliest in 1990.He endowed functional properties of metal to polymer and did the system research, so as to get properties beyond its functional properties of high molecular. Meanwhile, the phenomena and laws that the functional properties of metal were enhanced by polymer and the metal ion electric-optical properties were beyond its own. As a result, the hybrid optoelectronic performance material is obtained to exceed the performance of any single component, and the obtained material has the characteristics of flexibility. Moreover, he tackled the processing problem of the metal ion doped polymer because of agglomeration, to solve the world problem of material processing and established the new strategy of the material preparation. Professor Belfiore applied the core technology to polymer solar cells, polymer light-emitting diodes, polymer white light illumination device, which can solve the key issues of low optoelectronic materials efficiency and poor stability of polymer materials, to promote the realization of flexible polymer devices to replace inorganic planar devices, which has epoch-making significance to our country and even to the world. He hosted 6 foundations supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of the United States and more than 30 items of research topic from the government and enterprises, the total funds received about $8 million. He published 185 series of papers in the most authoritative international polymer journal of " Macromolecules "and the citation was more than 1500, established by ligand field theory of stability of synthetic containing polymer metal functional materials and in the theory and method of photoelectric applications. He wrote two books by himself (published by Willy John press). He was invited to give a presentation in more than 30 international academic conferences.
His international academic positions include: 1998- now, member of editorial board of Polymer Engineering & Science (Wiley); 1985-present, member of the American Chemical Society, member of science and Engineering Department of Technical Committee of polymer materials, 1986-now, member of American chemical polymer materials science and Engineering Department of Executive Committee; 1995-97 Colorado State University faculty long-term employment committee member; 1993-95, member of occupation development Committee Engineering College of Colorado State University; 1986-90, the National Natural Science Foundation of the United States National Committee for the promotion of regional NMR Center; 1986-89, member of Committee of Engineering Science in Colorado State University; 1986-89, Engineering Course Teaching Steering Committee of Colorado State University.
Since the one thousand foreign expert was hired three years ago, with Professor Belfiore as the leading talent, we realized the "base, talent, achievements," the construction of the Trinity, which means that the establishment of a national polymer hybrid material international science and technology cooperation base, a combination of 11 famous foreign experts in our school of foreign experts, made three major innovation achievements (Invention of the hybrid polymer solar cells, the photoelectronic conversion efficiency of which compared to the same type of polymer solar cells, the highest conversion efficiency increased by 17%; the invention of the key technology of metal ion hybrid polymer hybrid optical nanofiber; overcome the key technology of preparing the flexible metal hybrid polymer efficient luminescent thin films).
